Government Job Cuts Justified?

A roadshow attendee wondered why money be poured into saving banks but no money is set aside to preserve civil service jobs?

Alliance Leader David Ford explained that while the large amount of public sector jobs in Northern Ireland has cushioned the country through the recession, priority must now be given to increasing the number of jobs in the private sector. David McClarty, UUP, highlighted the financial implications of budget cuts – finding savings in a budget means job losses are inevitable.

SDLP Leader Mark Durkan hinted that a reform of the system might be a better way forward – increasing productivity doesn’t necessarily mean losing jobs.

Are you worried about the number of job losses in the public sector? Perhaps the civil service system needs looked at and refined?
